Your Inner Frenemy

Ancient Chinese military scholar and philosopher Sun Tzu wrote, “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.” He was advising warlords of the fifth century BCE to keep close tabs on the opposition—even to the point of fostering alliances with them.

It’s good advice. But in this context, your enemy isn’t the boss in your video game or your English teacher who just doesn’t get you. It’s the feelings of discomfort and outright pain that you hold in your body, imprisoned under layers of mean, distorted anger. This enemy is far more powerful because it’s in you, and it’s actually the most insightful teacher you’ll ever know. The feelings and sensations that are covered up by the heat and tension of anger are there to teach you—but that can happen only if you let yourself see and feel them.

Ask yourself, Would everyone who experiences what I experience have the same degree of anger I do in reaction to certain people or situations? No, right? If others would relate to these people or situations differently, what does this suggest?

Let’s go to an emotional boot camp of sorts, to see if we can sort this out.
